OUR STORY
How The Association Started
The Williamsburg Bar Association is part of a legal tradition that reaches back to the earliest days of Virginia and the founding of our nation. In Williamsburg, lawyers and civic leaders have long played an important role in shaping the laws, institutions, and principles that continue to define our Commonwealth and our country.
For generations, members of the Williamsburg legal community have gathered not only to advance the practice of law, but also to support the courts, assist their fellow attorneys, and serve the people of Williamsburg, James City County, York County, and the surrounding Historic Triangle. The Williamsburg Bar Association has carried that tradition forward by bringing local attorneys together for professional fellowship, education, leadership, and community service.
The Association's history reflects the dedication of countless attorneys who have served as its officers and members. Its leadership has included judges, prosecutors, public servants, private practitioners, and attorneys representing virtually every area of the law. Over the years, members of the Association have also distinguished themselves through service to the Virginia State Bar, the judiciary, William & Mary Law School, and the broader Williamsburg community.
The Association has also embraced the responsibility that comes with practicing law in a community so deeply connected to America's founding. Williamsburg was a place where fundamental questions of government, liberty, representation, and the rule of law were debated by the men and women who helped shape the Commonwealth and the nation. Today, our members continue that tradition by promoting professionalism, supporting justice, and using their legal skills in service to their community.
While the practice of law has changed dramatically since Williamsburg's colonial days, the fundamental principles remain remarkably constant: respect for the rule of law, commitment to justice, professional integrity, and service to others.
The Williamsburg Bar Association is proud to honor that legacy while looking toward the future—connecting today's legal community, supporting the next generation of attorneys, and serving the people and institutions that make Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle such a special place.
