Last year, on October 3rd, we stacked 44 contenders on Kiskiack golf course in a battle for the freshly minted WBA Cup.  When the dust settled, the Cup was stolen by a York County Bar Association crew, and the Honorable Richard Atlee has continued to hold the trophy in his office for the past year.  And yes. . .he brags about it.

This year, President Gordon Klugh is calling on everyone, skilled or unskilled, to come together and show our collective strength at our annual Golf Outing/Picnic.  Still a $500 donation to the charity of your choice for the BEST team.  Still a $300 donation to the charity of your choice on behalf of the WORST team.  Event Details as follows:

On June 3, a record number of members of the Williamsburg Bar Association attended our Annual Meeting in the Jury Assembly Room in the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse. Senator Thomas K. “Tommy” Norment, Jr. presented an update on changes to the Virginia Code at the 2015 session of the General Assembly, with an emphasis on those that affect lawyers in our area. Thank you to Senator Norment and to all who attended this great meeting!

Vernell Sutherland recently joined the Williamsburg Bar Association and wanted to let our members know that she’s back in town with her practice, Sutherland Mediation Services! Read more about Vernell and her practice below:

Vernell Sutherland and her husband, Duncan, lived in Williamsburg from 1992 until 2000. She not only attended William & Mary but started and led the first formal Volunteer Program and later the Williamsburg Institute at Colonial Williamsburg. She left when family and jobs took them, literally, around the country. She and her husband are now very happy to be back home!

Vernell is an experienced mediator. She received her M.B.A. from the College of William & Mary, her Ed.D. from Boston University, and her J.D. from Capital University Law School-completing her final two years of legal study at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary.

Vernell began her professional career as an educator but later moved into business management. She brings to her mediation practice more than two decades of senior management experience in for-profit and non-profit organizations-including law firms-along with extensive personal experience in employment-related legal issues including issues related to sex discrimination and sexual harassment. In addition to Issues dealing with family law including elder, Vernell is particularly well qualified in matters related to insurance, healthcare, education, computer technology, museums, real estate, food and hotel service. Vernell has worked in large corporations (Fortune 500) as well as had her own small business in skin care for over 12 years. She is also a licensed Realtor in Virginia.

Vernell did her initial mediation training with the Office of the City Attorney, Columbus, Ohio. Since then she received advanced training in family mediation from Ms. Dorothy Della Noce, Esq., a certified mediator and past president of the Virginia Mediation Network; earned advanced mediation certification from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law; and completed Family Medication Certification from the New Hampshire Certified Family Mediation Training Program.

Vernell is licensed to practice law in Virginia, California, and the District of Columbia.
